Bio

Nima Tamang is famously remembered as ‘the man who survived a Himalayan Black Bear attack’. He has been working as a trek guide for 17 years. He has trekked extensively in Nepal and Tibet during his time with Ussher Tours and Insight Himalaya.

The damage

Nima comes from Jharayni village. Although thank goodness there were no fatalities in the village the earthquake destroyed both Sangay and Nima’s houses.

When Nima’s house collapsed, all the bees that he had been keeping escaped and many of them attacked him and stung his face quite badly. You can see his face looks swollen in the video.

Most houses in the neighbouring villages including the health post and school were also all destroyed. The solar power systems we had given them are damaged and they had no means to recharge their telephones so we did not hear from them for some time.

How we helped

Nima, Sangay, his two sons and their father were sheltering out in the open as their houses were uninhabitable. They informed us that they had enough food; but they needed shelter aid urgently. 2x sacks of 30KG rice and 2 x bundles of corrugated metal sheets were given to each household. Our boys have all made good temporary shelters and are prepared for the Monsoon season. Due to lack of power, Nima was unable to charge his phone. We instructed him to travel to Jiri, a bigger town which is 2 hours walk away, and call once a week to update us with the situation in Jharayni to see if he needs any further help for his family.

Christopher Ussher and Binod Rai sent our senior guide Paul Rai to Jharayni village to report on the situation. Here is the message.
